Online casinos in Alberta
Alberta opened Canada’s second competitive market on 13 July 2026. A private operator needs both registration with the AGLC and a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation before it can take players; PlayAlberta, the AGLC’s own site, continues alongside them.
The legal gambling age for online casinos in Alberta is 18.

How online gambling works in Alberta
Alberta is Canada's second open market and it is new: it opened on 13 July 2026. It is built on the same two-gate shape as Ontario, which is the part most easily got wrong about it.
The first gate is registration with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis, the AGLC. That is the regulator, and registration is its judgement that a company is fit to run a gambling business in the province.
The second is a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation, the AiGC — a provincial corporation created to hold those agreements and run the commercial side of the market. Registration alone does not open the door; both are needed.
That distinction matters more here than in Ontario, because the market is barely a year old. A site that was reaching Albertan players on an offshore licence before July 2026 is not, by that fact, registered now, and a good deal of published writing about Alberta still predates the market entirely.
PlayAlberta, the AGLC's own site, continues to operate as it did before — it simply no longer has the province to itself. The legal age for online gambling in Alberta is 18, a year lower than Ontario's 19.
Licensed sites, offshore sites, and the difference in Alberta
Every operator on this page is one we have recorded as registered in Alberta. What sits outside that is worth describing plainly.
An operator without AGLC registration and an AiGC agreement is not licensed to offer online gambling in the province. As in Ontario, that is a rule aimed at the business rather than at the person playing.
The difference a player actually feels is protection. Limit-setting tools, a complaints route, game testing and the province's responsible-gambling programme are conditions of operating inside the Alberta framework. Outside it there is no provincial body to escalate to.
The AGLC publishes a searchable list of registered gaming and iGaming operators. That list settles the question, and it outranks anything on this page. If a site is not on it, nothing we publish makes it registered.
Official starting points and the directory
AiGC directs players to its registered-site information and recommends checking approval before playing. Follow the official route to the current list rather than trusting a table on an affiliate site whose Alberta authorization has not been established.
That distinction matters in a recently opened market: accepting customers before a regulatory change is not the same as meeting the new market's requirements. A familiar brand name is not enough on its own — a private comparison needs current regional identity and authorization evidence, not just recognition.
How to assess an Alberta casino profile
A useful profile needs a matching brand, legal company and regional website, followed by its authorization evidence. If one of these is inconsistent, resolve it before relying on payments, games or scores attached to the record.
Next, compare the service you expect to use. Look for the available withdrawal route, document requirements, the start point of any processing estimate and the way to contact support. Read the account's limits and self-exclusion information before you put money into it.
A documented limitation is more useful than an unsupported “instant withdrawal” or “best casino” label.
Account checks and location
AiGC's official material is for adults aged 18 and over. Play Alberta's own app description identifies adults located in Alberta as its audience. Check the precise account conditions for the provider you choose rather than assuming every website applies identical residency rules.
Prepare accurate identity and contact information. Check whether your payment account must be in the same name, what documents can be requested and how to submit them through the official service. Do not send personal documents to an affiliate website simply because it links to a casino.
If access fails, record the error and contact the provider. Do not use a province selector, a different address or software that disguises location as a way around account restrictions.
Payments and withdrawal timing
Play Alberta's published help gives an estimated three to five business days for EFT bank transfers after the withdrawal is approved. That wording should not be shortened to “paid in three days” — approval is a separate stage, and the estimate is not an independently measured PlayExpert payout time.
Before depositing, check the live cashier for available methods and read the current withdrawal policy. This guide does not infer support for Interac, PayPal or crypto from payment logos used by unrelated casinos.
A withdrawal passes through five stages worth checking separately:
- The request itself
- Whether identity or payment information is required
- When the operator says it has approved the request
- The estimate for your selected bank or payment route
- Whether the bank has credited the money
If you deposited in error or no longer want to play, ask support about the refund process. Do not assume you must gamble more to retrieve money, and do not use an old forum post as the current account policy.
Games, devices and account usability
AGLC's Play Alberta information describes casino-style games, including slots and virtual tables, as well as live-dealer products. Use the provider's current catalogue to confirm a specific title or table.
Play Alberta also has an official mobile app listing. Begin with its own website or verified publisher listing; a similar app name is not enough to establish identity. On your device, check that the cashier, limits and help are accessible before judging the experience only by the lobby.
Do not compare casinos by raw game count alone. Rules, stake ranges and accessible account controls may matter more for your intended use. A demo can help explain controls, but it does not predict a real-money outcome.
Advertising, limits and self-exclusion
This guide uses neutral factual information rather than promotional codes or bonus amounts. It does not interpret a casino's advertising as proof of authorization.
Alberta's official material describes a centralized self-exclusion system and responsible-play tools. Read the program's scope carefully rather than assuming it covers every website on the internet or every form of gambling.
Consider your spending limit before playing; increasing it after losses changes your exposure rather than improving your odds.
Resolving an account problem
AiGC's player guidance says to contact the operator first and then contact AiGC if concerns remain. Keep your account reference, transaction details, screenshots of relevant messages and the response from the operator. Do not include passwords or full payment-card details in an ordinary complaint email.
Ask the provider whether your issue concerns a game result, a payment, verification or account restrictions. Separating these questions makes the correspondence easier to assess. A referral to an authority does not guarantee compensation.
Alberta online casinos FAQ
Is online gambling legal in Alberta?
Yes. Online gambling is legal in Alberta on a site registered with the AGLC that also holds a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation, and on PlayAlberta, the AGLC's own site. The private market opened on 13 July 2026, making Alberta Canada's second open market after Ontario. Registration alone does not open the door; both gates are needed.
How old do you have to be to gamble in Alberta?
You must be 18 to gamble online in Alberta. That is a year lower than Ontario's 19, so the age is set by the province you are in rather than by the site you are on. The Alberta iGaming Corporation's official material is for adults aged 18 and over, and Play Alberta's app describes adults located in Alberta as its audience. Compare ages on our provinces page.
Who regulates online gambling in Alberta?
Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) regulates online gambling in Alberta, and the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) runs the commercial side of the market. AGLC registration is the regulator's judgement that a company is fit to run a gambling business; the AiGC holds the commercial agreements operators also need. The AGLC also runs PlayAlberta. Read how we verify a registration.
Are gambling winnings taxable in Alberta?
No, not for most players. Gambling winnings from casual play are not taxed as income in Canada, whether you win online or at a casino in Alberta. The exception is someone the Canada Revenue Agency treats as a professional gambler, whose winnings count as business income. Interest or investment income you later earn on winnings is taxable. Rules for every region are on our page on where you can play in Canada.
Are offshore casinos legal in Alberta?
No site is licensed to offer online gambling in Alberta without AGLC registration and an AiGC agreement. The rule is aimed at the business, not the player. Outside the framework you give up limit tools, a complaints route, game testing and the provincial responsible-gambling programme, and there is no provincial body to escalate to. A Kahnawake licence is not an Alberta registration.
How do I check that an online casino is registered in Alberta?
Search the AGLC's list of registered gaming and iGaming operators and suppliers. That list is the authority, over PlayExpert's page included, and if a site is not on it nothing we publish makes it registered. Our method is on How we verify.
How do I stop myself gambling in Alberta?
Use GameSense, the AGLC's responsible-gambling programme, which carries Alberta's self-exclusion route. Registered operators must also offer deposit, loss and time limits. Alberta Health Services runs a 24-hour Addiction Helpline on 1-866-332-2322. Read the programme's scope rather than assuming it covers every website on the internet. Ontario's BetGuard scheme is described on our Ontario page.
Has Alberta's private online casino market launched?
Yes. The Government of Alberta records 13 July 2026 as the launch date of the private market. Because it is so new, a site that reached Albertan players on an offshore licence before July 2026 is not registered now by that fact, and much published writing about Alberta predates the market entirely. Ontario's market opened earlier, on 4 April 2022: see our Ontario guide.
Does an Ontario AGCO registration make a casino legal in Alberta?
No. Ontario and Alberta have different market arrangements, so an AGCO registration does not establish Alberta authorization. In Alberta a private operator needs AGLC registration plus a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation. Check Alberta-specific evidence, such as the AGLC's registrant list, rather than relying on a familiar brand name. Ontario's own rules are on our Ontario page.
Why are some familiar casino brands missing from PlayExpert's Alberta page?
Because a recognizable name is not enough. A private comparison needs current regional identity and authorization evidence: a matching brand, legal company and regional website, then proof of Alberta authorization. Accepting customers before the market changed is not the same as meeting its new requirements, and we do not replace a missing fact with a guessed number. Our method is set out on How we verify.
How long do Play Alberta withdrawals take?
Play Alberta's published help estimates three to five business days for EFT bank transfers after the withdrawal is approved. Approval is a separate stage, so do not shorten that to three days or add an assumed approval time. The figure is the provider's estimate, not a payout time PlayExpert has measured. For how withdrawal stages work, see our fastest payout guide.
Are online casino games and apps the same in Alberta as in other provinces?
No, do not assume so. Use the correct Alberta website, the official app route and local account terms. AGLC's Play Alberta information describes slots, virtual tables and live-dealer products, and Play Alberta has an official mobile app listing, but a similar app name is not enough to establish identity. Check the cashier, limits and help on your device. Other provinces are on our provinces page.
Who should receive my Alberta online casino complaint first?
The operator. The Alberta iGaming Corporation's player guidance says to use the operator's support and complaint process first, then contact AiGC if concerns remain. Keep your account reference, transaction details, screenshots and the operator's response, but never include passwords or full card details. A referral to an authority does not guarantee compensation. Compare Ontario's route on our Ontario page.
Keep control of your play
Set a spending limit you can afford before playing. Read the provider's information about account limits, breaks and self-exclusion. If gambling is causing harm, seek support rather than trying to win back losses.
AHS Addiction Helpline: 1-866-332-2322, free and open 24/7.
These are information and support resources. Listing them is not a claim that they endorse PlayExpert.
